One of the most remarkable things about Jesus’ temptation in the wilderness is that Satan did not confront a weak believer; he confronted the beloved Son of God. Yet, Jesus did not overcome the temptation by displaying His power; He overcame it by standing on the Word.
Three times Satan came; three times Jesus responded, “It is written.” The devil questioned His identity; Jesus answered with Scripture. The devil offered shortcuts; Jesus answered with Scripture. The devil came again and twisted truth; Jesus answered with Scripture. Jesus did not enter a debate; He did not try to outsmart the enemy; He did handle it with His feelings; He spoke what God had already spoken.
That is how victory is maintained.
Many believers know the Word, but when pressure comes, they speak the pressure; they speak the fear. Soon their mouths become an echo of the problem instead of an echo of God’s promise. But Jesus teaches us another way. When the enemy says, “You will fail,” faith answers, “It is written, I shall be the head and not the tail…” When fear says, “You are alone,” faith answers, “It is written, Lo, I am with you.” When circumstances say, “There is no way forward,” faith answers, “It is written, I will make a way, even in the wilderness.”
Power is not in positive thinking or in repeating empty words; the power is in bringing our hearts, our mouths, and our circumstances into agreement with what God has already said.
Every soldier goes into battle with a weapon; Jesus entered the wilderness with Scripture; every temptation, every lie was confronted with Scripture. The battle was won because the Word had the final say.
This is why Satan works so hard to keep believers ignorant of Scripture. A believer without the Word is vulnerable, and a believer who knows the Word is equipped. But a believer who knows the Word, believes the Word, and speaks the Word in faith becomes difficult to defeat.
Today, do not allow fear, doubt, or circumstances to dictate your confession; let the Word of God be the loudest voice in your life. Fill your heart with the Word until, like Jesus, your first response in battle becomes, “It is written.”
Prayer
Father, help me to answer every lie, every temptation, and every challenge with what You have spoken. Let Your Word dwell in me richly until it becomes my confidence, my weapon, and my victory. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
