When God Feels Far Away

Scripture: Isaiah 49:13โ€“16

โ€œSing, O heavens; and be joyful, O earth; and break forth into singing, O mountains: for the LORD hath comforted his people, and will have mercy upon his afflicted. But Zion said, The LORD hath forsaken me, and my Lord hath forgotten me.โ€ โ€” Isaiah 49:13โ€“14 (KJV)

Heaven said, “Sing,” but Zion could not sing. God was speaking about comfort and mercy, but Zion could not find either in her life. She was just there, existing, watching one day follow another, but she no longer felt remembered by God. Her words were not really about one unanswered prayer. They came from the deeper pain of feeling left behind by the One she thought would never leave her.

Her words were, โ€œThe LORD hath forsaken me, and my Lord hath forgotten me.โ€ There are people who understand that sentence without needing it to be explained. They wake up because morning has come, carry out their responsibilities because they have to, respond when people speak to them and somehow make it through the day. From the outside, they are functioning, but inside, something has gone quiet. They are not expecting much anymore. They have been disappointed too many times to keep getting excited.

Yet, they still believe in God, and that makes it more hurting. If they did not believe He was there, His silence would not trouble them. But they believe He sees them, and they cannot understand why being seen has not brought help. They believe He knows what they have endured, yet life continues as if their pain has made no difference in heaven. Eventually, the heart begins to ask what the mouth is afraid to say: โ€œLord, have You left me here?โ€

Maybe that is where you are now. You are not angry enough to walk away, but you are too tired to hope as you once did. You have watched other people move forward while your own life seems to have remained in the same place. You have tried to make sense of it; at times, you have blamed yourself. You have wondered whether you prayed wrongly, missed God somewhere or did something that caused Him to withdraw from you. Now you are not even asking for much. You just want to know that God has not turned His face away.

Then God responded to Zion, โ€œCan a woman forget her sucking child, that she should not have compassion on the son of her womb?โ€ God did not begin by explaining the existence of the silence. He addressed first what the silence had done to her heart. Zion needed more than a change of circumstances at that moment. She needed to know that she had a place in God’s heart

A nursing child may be unable to see his mother, but the mother still feels the pull of that child. His need reaches her because he belongs to her. Yet God knew that every example drawn from human love has its limits, so He continued: โ€œYea, they may forget, yet will I not forget thee.โ€

People can forget. They can move on while you are still dealing with what they left behind. Some will promise they’ll be there for you and later become strangers. Others know that you are struggling but have become tired of hearing about it. Even those who love you may fail to understand how much strength it takes for you to get through an ordinary day.

God says, โ€œYet will I not forget thee.โ€ Then He gave Zion something she could picture: โ€œBehold, I have graven thee upon the palms of my hands.โ€

You may feel as if your life has been pushed into a corner where even God no longer looks, but He says you are upon His hands. Not written lightly, as something that can fade; you are graven; cut into the place that remains continually before Him. Your name is there; your face is there. The part of your story that no one asks about is there; the tears you wiped quickly so that nobody would notice are there. Even the days when you felt nothing and could only continue because life would not stop are known to Him.

Zionโ€™s feelings were factual, but her conclusion was wrong. God had not forgotten her. While she was lamenting His absence, He was speaking about her restoration.

There may be things God is doing that have not yet reached the part of your life you can see. Heaven may already be speaking of comfort while you are still standing in the place that made you cry. The song may have begun before the evidence arrived.

So, do not leave His presence with only your own words ringing in your heart. Stay long enough to hear His answer: โ€œI will not forget thee.โ€

Prayer

Lord, find me in this place where I have only been existing. Let Your mercy reach me here. Silence every thought that says You have abandoned me. I have carried this heaviness for too long. Please, let what heaven knows about my life begin to appear on earth. Give me a reason to hope again, and let the heart that cannot sing today live to sing of Your faithfulness. in Jesus’ name. Amen
