Carried, Not Crushed

Scripture: Isaiah 46:3, 4

Song: I Will Carry You by Michael W. Smith

Some people are carrying so much that they have forgotten what it feels like to be carried. They carry the family, expectations, the fear of what may happen next, disappointments, unfinished battles, other people’s opinions, and responsibilities no one else seems willing to bear. They have become so used to holding everything together that weakness now feels like failure.

But Isaiah 46 gives a startling picture of people who were carrying their gods. They lifted them, loaded them onto animals, and moved them from place to place. The very things they trusted for help had become additional weight.

Then the Lord spoke: “I have made you, and I will carry you.”

That is the difference between God and every other thing we depend on, such as false securities and approval that must be maintained, reputation that must be protected, and control that must be constantly defended.

What have you made into a god?

Perhaps it is the image you have built. You keep appearing successful, strong, and untroubled because you fear what people will think if they see the cracks; it is a relationship you cannot release, even though sustaining it is draining your peace. Perhaps it is money, position, influence, or the need to remain in control.

That is the cruelty of idols; they promise support but become a weight. Their gods could not speak, move, answer, or save. Yet they continued carrying them.

Whatever takes God’s place will eventually demand to be carried. It will require constant attention, protection, and sacrifice. You will spend your strength trying to preserve the very thing you expected to preserve you.

But the God who created you does not sit on your back as another burden; He bends down to carry you. You may be tired because you have been trying to perform God’s role in your own life. You have been attempting to control every outcome, prevent every disappointment, solve every problem, and hold everyone together.

But you are not the carrier of your destiny; God is.

There are moments when faith does not look like pushing harder. It looks like releasing the weight. It is admitting, “Lord, I cannot keep holding this as though everything depends on me.”

You do not have to carry tomorrow before it arrives. You do not have to carry every person’s expectation, the fear of what may happen, or the shame of what has already happened. The One who made you has not become tired of you. God says, “I made you, and because I made you, I take responsibility for carrying you.”

He says, “Even to your old age, I am He.” Your strength may fail, and your body may change, but the arms holding you do not weaken with time.

So, ask yourself today: What am I carrying that I should have surrendered to God?

Lay it down, because the God you serve is not another burden; He is the One who carries you.

Prayer

Lord, I have carried some burdens for so long that I no longer know how to release them. Today, I place them in Your hands. Deliver me from the need to control every outcome and appear strong before everyone. Help me to rest in the strength of Your arms. Amen.
