“And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.” — Ephesians 6:17 (KJV)
Before a man can fight for a kingdom, he must first belong to that kingdom. No soldier goes to war wearing a helmet that does not belong to his army. Perhaps that is why Paul speaks about the helmet of salvation before he mentions the sword of the Spirit. Salvation is more than a prayer prayed at an altar. It is a change of ownership. It is a transfer from the kingdom of darkness into the kingdom of God. It is God taking a man who was once far away and bringing him into His family.
The helmet reminds us that we are no longer fighting for acceptance. We are now a part of the army fighting because we have been accepted. We are no longer standing alone; we stand under the authority of the King who saved us.
That assurance is so important because the enemy is constantly looking for ways to make believers forget who they belong to. He wants them to live like spiritual orphans, unsure of their standing with God and uncertain of the victory Christ has already secured for them.
But God did not save us only to protect us; He also armed us. Paul describes the Word of God as the sword of the Spirit. Unlike the other pieces of armor, the sword is not worn; it is wielded. A soldier may wear a helmet and still lose ground if he never picks up his weapon.
In the same way, many believers know they are saved, yet they rarely use the Word God has placed in their hands. When Jesus was tempted in the wilderness, He did not argue with Satan; He answered him with the Word of God, “It is written…” Three simple words, yet they silenced every attack.
The Word is not just a book we read during quiet time. It is God’s truth applied to life’s battles. It strengthens the weary heart, exposes deception, confronts temptation, and reminds us of realities that circumstances often try to hide. The enemy would rather face a believer who owns a Bible than a believer who knows how to use it. A sword left in its sheath is of little use on a battlefield.
Today, remember that God has not called us to live intimidated by the enemy. He has called us to stand in the confidence of our salvation and to fight with the weapon He has provided. You belong to God’s kingdom; you stand under His authority; you have His Word in your hands; you are protected, but you are also armed.
Prayer
Father, thank You for the gift of salvation and for bringing me into Your family. Help me never to forget who I belong to. Teach me to know Your Word, trust Your Word, and use Your Word in every battle I face. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
