“We be not able to go up against the people; for they are stronger than we… and we were in our own sight as grasshoppers, and so we were in their sight.”
There is a way a man can stand before what God has prepared and still disqualify himself with his own mouth. The promise may be before them, the word may be sure, the land may be waiting, yet something inside him has already concluded, “This cannot be for someone like me.” Before the battle begins, they have already concluded that they are too small.
This was the tragedy of Israel at the border of Canaan. Their words exposed more than fear. Their words exposed a damaged sense of identity. They said, “We were in our own sight as grasshoppers.” That means the enemy did not need to name them first; they named themselves. They looked at themselves through intimidation and accepted a smallness God never gave them.
This should trouble us seeing they were not called grasshoppers by God; they were not brought out of Egypt as grasshoppers; they were not carried through the Red Sea as grasshoppers; they were not fed with manna as grasshoppers. God had dealt with them as His covenant people, but they described themselves by the size of their opposition.
This is one of the hidden obstacles to manifestation: belittling yourself before what God has called you to possess.
Some people are not waiting because God has not spoken; they are waiting because they have already disqualified themselves. They keep saying, “I am not enough; I am too small; I do not have the capacity; people like me do not enter such places; I cannot rise to that level.” It sounds humble, but when it contradicts God, it is not humility. It is unbelief in quiet clothing.
True humility does not argue with God’s calling. True humility does not insult what God is building in you. True humility says, “Lord, without You I am nothing, but if You are with me, I will obey.” You must stop calling yourself what God has not called you. Stop reducing your life because of what you are facing. Stop letting the size of the battle become the name you answer to. A giant in front of you does not make you a grasshopper. A difficult door does not make you unqualified.
The second obstacle is believing the enemy’s size more than God’s presence.
They said, “They are stronger than we.” That was true only because they left God out of the measurement. They compared themselves with the inhabitants of the land, but they did not compare the inhabitants with God. They measured the enemy against human strength, not divine presence.
Once God is removed from your thinking, everything will look stronger than you. The enemy will look stronger, the assignment will look impossible, and even a door God opened will begin to look like a threat.
But the promise was never resting on their strength alone. God did not bring them to Canaan because they had greater muscles than Anak. He brought them there because He had spoken and because His presence was with them.
Let your faith be anchored in the truth that you are not by yourself, not in the lie that you are powerful by yourself. The enemy may be strong, but he is not stronger than God; the wall may be high, but it is not higher than God’s word. Do not make the enemy bigger than the God who is with you.
You must not let your eyes become the judge over God’s promise. Do not let intimidation become the interpreter of your future, nor allow the size of the enemy to rename you, silence you, or push you outside what God has prepared.
Prayer
Lord, deliver me from every grasshopper mentality. Forgive me for making the enemy bigger than Your presence; help me to see that if You are with me, the obstacle is not final. Let Your word become stronger than the wall before me, stronger than the giant before me, and stronger than the weakness within me. I will not shrink at the border of promise. Amen.
