Scripture: Psalm 94:2

There are moments when evil becomes arrogant such that it is no longer hiding and it begins to act as though no one will confront it, because pride grows bold when judgment seems delayed. Men speak carelessly, oppress freely, and carry on as though power belongs to them forever. They mistake God’s patience for weakness. They take His silence as permission. They read delay as absence, because nothing has interrupted them yet, they begin to live as though no hand can reach them.

That is the atmosphere behind this cry: “Lift up thyself, thou judge of the earth.”

It is the cry of one who knows that the situation has gone beyond human repair. It is the appeal made when wickedness has become risen, when the righteous are being pressed, and when only God’s intervention can restore moral order. It is a call for God to rise in His office as Judge.

This is important because God is not only a Father, Shepherd, and Provider; He is a Judge. He sees conduct for what it is. He weighs words, motives, actions, secret dealings, hidden injuries, public boasts, and private cruelties. Nothing escapes His courtroom. Nothing is lost in His sight. Men may evade accountability on earth, but they do not live outside His jurisdiction.

The verse says, “Render a reward to the proud. Pride is not just self-importance here. It is rebellion grown confident. It is the spirit that behaves as though it will never be brought low. It is the attitude that tramples others and still sleeps well. It is the heart that has grown so full of itself that it no longer fears God, no longer restrains itself, and no longer imagines that judgment is real and lives as though God sees nothing, says nothing, and will do nothing.

There are seasons when the pain of the righteous is not only in what they are suffering but also in what they are watching. They watch lies stand tall and injustice talk boldly. They watch those who wound others move through life untouched. If the heart is not guarded, it can begin to wonder whether righteousness still matters, whether God still intervenes, or whether heaven still governs the earth at all.

However, this verse does not license that conclusion. It gives deep relief but also deep warning. Relief, because the righteous are not abandoned to a world without government. Warning, because the proud are not dealing only with men they have despised or injured. They are dealing with the Judge of the earth. Every proud word is heard before Him. Every act of contempt is seen before Him. Every hidden abuse of power is exposed before Him. He is not hurried, but He is not indifferent. He is not restless, but He is not passive. And when He rises, He does not rise confused. He rises with full knowledge.

Do not let the boldness of evil teach you that evil is secure. Do not let the long standing of pride persuade you that pride is safe. There is a Judge over the earth. He has not resigned. He has not been displaced. He has not forgotten how to abase what exalted itself against truth.

So, pray this verse with understanding and reckless abandon as a cry to lay hold of the Judge of the earth to arise to step into the oppression and torment of men. Confront the pride of the wicked by staying with the God whose throne still rules who rules in the affairs of men to vindicate you.

Prayer
Judge of the earth, arise over every matter in which pride has exalted itself and righteousness has been trampled. Over every place where the proud have spoken, acted, and prospered as though no judgment existed, let Your righteous response break forth. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
