There are some scriptures you don’t just read, you feel them.

“As the deer panteth for the water…” is not a cute picture. It’s a serious one. A deer doesn’t pant because it wants something extra. It pants because it needs something essential.  David describes his desire for God: not as interest, but as need, not as God is important, but as “God is necessary.” That alone can correct a lot of us, because many times we treat God like a support system, something we add to life. But David is describing a different reality: a life that has discovered that without God, the inside dries out.

Sometimes people think thirst for God is only for those in trouble. But that’s not true. You can be doing well and still be thirsty. You can be surrounded by people and still feel empty. You can be progressing and still sense a dry space within you. That dry space is not always a sign that you’re failing. Sometimes it’s a sign that your soul is refusing to be satisfied with shallow things.

David says, “My soul thirsts for God, for the living God.” It means he wasn’t looking for a religious routine. He wasn’t looking for motivation. He was looking for the real God, who is present, active, near, personal. Thirst doesn’t leave by pretending. If you are thirsty, you don’t argue it away, you drink. So, what have you been drinking from?

Some people drink from noise, always scrolling, always busy, always distracted. Some drink from approval, needing to be noticed, celebrated, validated. Some drink from achievement, trying to feel enough by doing more. But the problem with these waters is that they don’t satisfy deeply. They can numb thirst, but they can’t heal it. So, the thirst returns.

David is reminding us that there is a thirst only God can answer, not because God is useful, but because God is life, not because we want to be more spiritual, but because the soul was designed for Him. When a person truly starts to seek God, they are becoming aligned, by coming back to their true source.

Today, don’t be ashamed of thirst. Don’t silence it. Let it do its holy work, let it lead you to God. You don’t have to start with big prayers. It can be as simple as: Lord, I need You.

Prayer: Living God, my soul is thirsty. I don’t want to keep filling myself with things that cannot satisfy me. Teach me to seek You sincerely, not just when I need answers, but because I need You. Fill the dry places in me with You, until my deepest satisfaction becomes You. Amen.
