Scripture: Lamentations 3:22–23

It is of the Lord’s mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness (Lamentations 3:22–23).

There are things that should have finished you: moments where everything aligned against you, your mistakes, people’s decisions, timing, and even your own ignorance. If justice had spoken in those moments, your story would have ended there. But it didn’t. Something interrupted the outcome.

Mercy stepped in.

However, unpleasant situations usually narrow our sight such that we become so burdened by present pain that it begins to silence the memory of mercy. The unanswered prayer stands so boldly in front that we stop honouring the prayers God already answered. It fills the mouth with what is missing, what is late, what is difficult, what is unresolved.

But no matter what is happening now, there are moments in your life that could not have been anything but God; times when help rose from a direction you could not have arranged; seasons when you were sure you would sink, yet somehow you were held; battles you did not have the strength to win, yet they did not swallow you; outcomes that turned in a way that made it clear that God had stepped into the matter.

Therefore, you must not allow current pressure to make you dishonest about that. Pain may be present, but so was His mercy; delay may be obvious, but so was His intervention; confusion may be deep, but so were the moments He came through.

The Scripture says, “It is of the Lord’s mercies that we are not consumed…” This verse reveals we may have certain experiences; it says we were not consumed. It means the enemy pushed, life hit, mistakes were made, and weakness overtook, yet we were not consumed and swallowed because of his mercy. As a result of past acts of mercy, we can be assured of renewed mercy even in the midst of this turbulence.

Stop speaking as though your life is only a record of what went wrong, no. It is also a record of what should have ruined you but did not. There are outcomes in your life that cannot be explained by intelligence, caution, or human support. It could only have been mercy.

Today, take time to remember and write moment(s) in your life where things could have gone wrong but didn’t. Do not consider it as luck or coincidence. That was God showing you mercy.

Prayer
Lord, forgive me for the moments I spoke as though You had done nothing when my life carries the proof of Your mercy. I’m grateful for the gift of mercy that is renewed every morning. In the middle of unpleasant situations, teach my heart to remember Your mercy and to trust You again. In Jesus’ name, amen.
