Song: In Christ Alone

Sometimes the heart can rest on something without admitting it. What looked like a simple desire becomes a quiet support, and when it begins to fail, the soul feels the weight of that failure more deeply than expected. It is not always just the pain of disappointment; sometimes it is the pain of realizing that the heart had leaned where it should not have rested.

David speaks into that place with unusual firmness and tenderness: “My soul, wait thou only upon God; for my expectation is from him.” He turns inward and addresses his own soul, as though he knows it has been pulled in too many directions. He does not leave his heart at the mercy of fear, delay, or loss. He calls it back. He gathers its scattered expectation and brings it again before God.

That is part of what it means to hope in God. It is not merely to say that God is able. It is to bring the heart back from every other place it has gone to seek stability. It is to stop letting peace depend on what people do, on how quickly answers come, or on whether life turns the way we hoped. It is to place the weight of the soul on God and leave it there.

David goes on to say, “He only is my rock and my salvation: he is my defence; I shall not be moved.” This is where the soul begins to settle. God is no longer treated as part of our hope, but as the ground of it. He becomes the place where the heart stands when other things feel uncertain. He becomes the refuge beneath the pressure, the steadiness beneath the waiting, the strength beneath the weakness.

And perhaps this is where many of us need mercy most. We have said we trusted God, yet inwardly we have leaned on things that could never hold us. Still, Christ does not turn away from the heart that has rested wrongly. He receives it and draws it back. He teaches it, again and again, to be still in Him.

So when disappointment exposes what the soul has been leaning on, do not let that exposure drive you further into unrest. Let it drive you back to the Rock. Speak to your soul. Bring your expectation back to God. Lay before Him the fear, the ache, the delay, and the unanswered things. Then remain there, until the heart learns again that its true resting place has never been in what can fail, but in Christ alone because Christ is not one more hope to try; He is the only hope that can hold the soul.

Prayer
Lord Jesus, in the places where disappointment has left me inwardly scattered, gather me again. Be my rock where I have felt unstable, my refuge where I have felt exposed, and my hope where other hopes have failed. In Christ alone, let my heart rest. Amen.
