How Much More Shall the Blood of Christ?

Something is wrong when the mention of blood used in an occult ritual immediately produces fear, but the mention of the blood of Jesus produces only a familiar religious response. Tell some believers that blood was used to establish an evil covenant, pronounce a curse or dedicate something to darkness, and they become deeply troubled. They begin to imagine how powerful the ritual must be and how difficult its consequences will be to overturn. Yet tell them that Jesus Christ offered His own blood through the eternal Spirit, and they treat it as though it were just a comforting phrase for the forgiveness of sins.

How did we become more persuaded by what other blood (blood of created beings) is believed to accomplish in darkness than by what the blood of Jesus has accomplished at Calvary? Hebrews answers with one question: “How much more shall the blood of Christ?”

Long before Calvary, there was a night in Egypt when God demonstrated what blood could accomplish when joined to His word. Israel had lived under Pharaoh’s oppression for generations. His authority had shaped their labour, restricted their freedom and determined the lives their children inherited. After years beneath that bondage, Egypt must have appeared too powerful to escape. Then God introduced the blood.

Every Israelite household was instructed to place the blood of a lamb upon its doorposts. God declared, “When I see the blood, I will pass over you” (Exodus 12:13). The blood did not need to shout from the door. It did not argue with the judgement passing through the land. It stood as evidence that God had already spoken concerning the people inside.

Judgement saw the blood and passed over. Destruction saw the blood and could not enter. Egypt saw the blood and began to lose its captives. The people entered those houses as slaves, but they came out ready for freedom. The blood was not only a defence against what was moving through Egypt; it marked the end of Egypt’s claim over them. Pharaoh had resisted warnings, signs and plagues, but when the blood appeared, a bondage that had survived for generations moved towards its end.

Yet that was only the blood of an ordinary lamb. How much more shall the blood of Christ? If the blood of a lamb could distinguish God’s people in a land under judgement, how much more can the blood of Jesus distinguish those who belong to Him? If that blood could stand between a household and destruction, how much more can Christ’s blood defend your household? If it could announce the end of generations of slavery, how much more can the blood of Jesus answer inherited bondage, evil dedications and covenants that contradict the will of God?

The kingdom of darkness has long attempted to use blood in rituals, sacrifices, covenants and dedications. It does so because blood represents life and because every covenant seeks a voice through which it can continue speaking. But all blood used by darkness is the blood of created life. It is limited, corruptible and inferior. None of it can stand beside the blood of the spotless Son of God.

Jesus did not offer the blood of another creature. He offered Himself. His blood was not presented through the power of an occult altar, ancestral shrine or demonic covenant. He offered Himself through the eternal Spirit. His sacrifice carries the authority of an endless life. Therefore, no blood speaking from the ground, no blood used in darkness, and no covenant empowered by an evil sacrifice can speak above the blood of Jesus.

Why, then, should a believer hear that other blood was used against a family and immediately become afraid? Why should we believe that evil blood can establish something the blood of Jesus cannot overturn? Why should we magnify the sacrifice made by darkness while limiting the sacrifice of Christ to a religious slogan?

If darkness believes that blood can speak, how much more should the Church believe in the blood of Jesus?

This is not a contest between two equal powers. Calvary did not place the blood of Jesus alongside other bloods to discover which would prevail. Christ’s blood stands in a class of its own because the life in it is without sin, the sacrifice behind it is perfect, and the covenant established through it is everlasting.

This series on the power in the blood of Jesus may end here, but the power of the blood does not. Whenever darkness attempts to impress you with what other blood has done, answer it with the question heaven has placed in your mouth: How much more shall the blood of Christ?

Prayer

Today, I bring every evil covenant, sacrifice, dedication, accusation and contrary voice beneath the authority of the blood of Jesus. As the blood distinguished Israel in Egypt, let the blood of Jesus distinguish me and my household. As the blood marked the end of their captivity, let every bondage contrary to Your will lose its hold. In Jesus’ mighty name, Amen.
