We have heard of the cross so often that we can stand near it and feel nothing. We can say Jesus died for us and remain untouched, as though those words were small enough to pass through the mouth without breaking the heart. But the cross is very significant, because it is the place we should have been.

That road was ours to walk, that shame had our name on it, and that judgment was coming for us. What happened there was not light suffering. It was the pain of a good man being mistreated; it was the full answer to our sin moving toward us, our guilt being called to account, judgment refusing to pass by, but before it reached us, Christ stepped into it.

He did not stand at a distance. He did not look at our ruin and pity us; He placed Himself where we should have stood. He took what should have fallen on us; He was treated like the guilty one so that the guilty could go free. He was handled without mercy, struck until His body gave way under pain. He was mocked and disgraced in public. He was made to carry shame that was never His and suffering He did not deserve. The Holy One was treated as though He was defiled. The Righteous One stood in the place of the condemned. The One who deserved only honour was covered with the disgrace of sinners, yet none of it belonged to Him.

It was ours.

The suffering was ours. The shame, judgment, punishment, and death were ours. He did not just suffer near our sin; He stepped beneath its penalty. He did not just witness the sentence; He received it into His own body.

We would not have survived it.

We would not have survived the weight of the judgment. We would not have lasted under what sin demands when it is fully answered. It would have ended us completely. There would have been no strength to bear it, no righteousness to defend us, no voice to plead for us. We would have been lost under it, yes, completely lost.

But He stayed for our sins.

He did not stay because He had no choice; He stayed because He could not bear to leave us to what our sin deserved. He stayed because love would not step aside, because mercy was determined to have us back, even if it cost Him everything.

So, when you look at the cross, do not rush past it. That is your shame, your sentence, judgment on Him. He could have walked away, but He chose you.

Prayer:
Lord Jesus, thank you for loving me enough to die in my place. Do not let my heart grow familiar with the cross.  Let it make me love You with a deeper, broken, grateful heart. Amen.
