Scripture: Proverbs 6:11

“So shall thy poverty come as one that travelleth, and thy want as an armed man.”

Some things do not suddenly appear in a life; they approach quietly. They draw near while everything still seems normal. They build gradually until one day, what was far off is standing at the door. The earlier verses spoke about a little sleep, a little slumber, and a little folding of the hands. Nothing loud or dramatic, just small delays that looked harmless at the time. But those little things were not meaningless; they were leading somewhere.

Our text reveals, “So shall thy poverty come…” This did not just happen; it came because something had been neglected for too long. It came because what should have been faced was pushed aside. It came because repeated delay slowly formed an outcome.

Note that this is not only about money. The poverty here can also speak of lack in other areas of life. A person can suffer poverty of discipline, progress, strength, fruitfulness, and even poverty of spiritual sharpness. This happens not always because God withheld help, but because small patterns were left unchecked until they produced visible loss.

Scripture says it comes “as one that travelleth.” This reveals while the sluggard was still excusing his delay, something was already on the move. While he was still saying, “there is time,” tomorrow was already taking shape. While he was still folding his hands, the result of that posture was drawing nearer.

The future is not waiting for you to finally become serious. It is already being formed by the way you live now. The things you keep postponing, the habits you keep excusing, the promptings you keep ignoring, they are not standing still; they are moving in a direction.

The result is “and thy want as an armed man.” It comes with force. It comes in a way that is difficult to resist once it has fully arrived. What could have been corrected earlier with a simple response may later require much more pain to undo. What could have been prevented through discipline may become a heavier battle because it was ignored for too long.

As a result, God speaks before the outcome comes. He shows the ant. He questions the sluggard. Then He reveals the consequence. This is not to crush us, but to wake us up.

There are things that can still be changed while they are still far off. There are losses that do not have to happen. There are outcomes that can still be altered if we stop treating neglect like a small matter and begin to respond with wisdom.

So, the passage leaves us with questions we should not avoid. What is your present pattern leading to? What are your daily choices building? What is quietly approaching because of what you have repeatedly allowed? These questions are not there to produce fear. They are there to restore wisdom.

If neglect can quietly produce loss, then obedience can quietly produce strength. If carelessness can shape tomorrow, then so can discipline. If repeated delay can lead somewhere painful, then faithful response can lead somewhere fruitful.

Prayer
Lord, open my eyes to where my present pattern is leading. Deliver me from outcomes formed by neglect. Teach me to live with wisdom, so that what approaches my life will reflect obedience, readiness, and Your grace, in Jesus’ name, amen.
